Diagnostic reagent for quantitative examination of lipase in human serum or plasma in vitro with a photometric system.
Lipase is an enzyme that breaks down triglycerides into free fatty acids and glycerol by catalyzing the hydrolysis of the ester bonds in triglycerides. Lipases are present in pancreatic secretions and participate in fat digestion and metabolism.
The pancreas produces the lipase enzyme in the acinar cells. This process begins with the formation of the enzyme within the cells, followed by processing and packaging before being released into the pancreatic duct. When fatty foods enter the intestine, the body sends signals to stimulate the release of lipase. This enzyme then helps break down fats into simpler forms, making them easier for the body to absorb.
High serum lipase levels can indicate pancreatitis. Acute pancreatitis occurs due to the pancreas digesting itself with its own enzymes, leading to edema and inflammation. The increase in serum lipase levels is more specific than amylase in assessing pancreatic damage, making it a primary biomarker for diagnosing acute pancreatitis.
