Product Description

A diagnostic reagent for the quantitative examination of C-reactive protein (CRP) in serum or plasma in vitro by a photometric system.

CRP is a pentameric protein synthesized by the liver, whose level rises in response to inflammation. CRP is an acute-phase reactant protein that is primarily induced by the IL-6 action on the gene responsible for the transcription of CRP during the acute phase of an inflammatory/infectious process.

The Role of CRP in The Human Body

C-reactive protein (CRP) plays an important role in the inflamantory process, activating celluler defense pathways, protecting against bacterial infections, protecting the body by binding to phatogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Salmonella enterica and as a means of initial cleaning of bacteria to other organs such as the liver and spleen.

Increased CRP Levels

C-reactive protein (CRP) levels can be affected by a variety of conditions and medications. High CRP levels, especially those above 50 mg/dL, are strongly associated with bacterial infections such as hepatitis C, dengue fever, and malaria. The normal range for CRP in the body is between 1 mg/dL and 10 mg/dL. Chronic conditions such as inflammatory arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can cause persistent elevations in CRP, making it difficult to use as a predictive marker for cardiovascular disease. In addition, factors such as obesity, insomnia, depression, smoking, and diabetes can also contribute to mild elevations in CRP. Medications such as NSAIDs, statins, and magnesium supplements can affect CRP levels.

Measurement Method

Immunoturbidimetric test.
