Lipid profile for atherosclerosis monitoring

National health research data in 2018 showed that 1.5% or around 4.2 million Indonesians were diagnosed with coronary heart disease (CHD). Examination of the lipid profile is the key to early patient diagnosis to describe the risk of atherosclerosis which is the main cause of CHD. A person's lipid profile can be seen through blood tests, namely cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL, and HDL levels. Clinical relevance

Cholesterol as a component of cell membranes functions as a precursor for the biosynthesis of steroid hormones and bile acids. Each type of lipoprotein shows a different correlation for coronary atherosclerosis. LDL cholesterol contributes to the formation of atherosclerotic plaques in the intima-media of arteries and has a strong correlation with coronary heart disease (CHD) and risk of death. Even with Total Cholesterol (TC) values within the normal range, an increase in LDL cholesterol concentration indicates a high risk of symptoms. HDL cholesterol has a protective effect that can inhibit the formation of atherosclerotic plaques and shows an inverse relationship with the prevalence of CHD. A low HDL cholesterol value is an independent risk factor. Determination of individual total cholesterol (TC) levels is used for screening purposes, while for a better risk assessment, it is necessary to measure HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels.
