Lipid profile for atherosclerosis monitoring

National health research data in 2018 showed that 1.5% or around 4.2 million Indonesians were diagnosed with coronary heart disease (CHD)[1]. Examination of the lipid profile is the key to early patient diagnosis to describe the risk of atherosclerosis which is the main cause of CHD. A person's lipid profile can be seen through blood tests, namely cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL, and HDL levels. Proline produces lipid profile reagents in a stable and ready-to-use liquid form in production facilities that have received GMPMD (Good Manufacturing Practices for Medical Devices) certification from the Indonesian Ministry of Health and ISO 13485:2016.

Clinical relevance

Cholesterol as a component of cell membranes functions as a precursor for the biosynthesis of steroid hormones and bile acids [2]. Each type of lipoprotein shows a different correlation for coronary atherosclerosis[5,6]. LDL cholesterol contributes to the formation of atherosclerotic plaques in the intima-media of arteries and has a strong correlation with coronary heart disease (CHD) and risk of death[6]. Even with Total Cholesterol (TC) values within the normal range, an increase in LDL cholesterol concentration indicates a high risk of symptoms. HDL cholesterol has a protective effect that can inhibit the formation of atherosclerotic plaques and shows an inverse relationship with the prevalence of CHD. A low HDL cholesterol value is an independent risk factor. Determination of individual total cholesterol (TC) levels is used for screening purposes, while for a better risk assessment, it is necessary to measure HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels[7].
